Yamada Gadō (Yamada Mitsugu) was born August 22, 1938 in Niigata Prefecture. He studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Satō Hōdō. He received his license and started teaching in 1969. He was a member of the Kohō-kai, the Gadō-kai, and the Kamo Kinko-ryū Shakuhachi Study Group.
