Brian came to the shakuhachi through a remarkable act of generosity. Around the year 2000 he was working in a lab with a Japanese scientist in his sixties and, during conversation one day, casually mentioned how drawn he was to the sound of the instrument. Fortuitously, the scientist's childhood friend happened to be a shakuhachi instructor in Japan. A few months later, Brian was called into his office and presented with a gift that had been sent from his childhood friend in Japan: a beautiful root-end shakuhachi. Brian had no choice but to learn to play the instrument to in some small way repay this act of kindness. He has studied the shakuhachi seriously since 2006 with Michael Chikuzen Gould, earning a shihan in 2019. Unfortunately Brian never had a chance to meet the man who gifted him the flute that started the journey to learn this remarkable instrument. In some respects, it is better this way.
