Kikunaka Beishū (Kikunaka Yonekichi) lost his sight as a child , and at the age of seven he became a student of Nakajima Kengyō in Kōbe, a master of Ikuta-ryū koto and Nogawa-ryū shamisen. In 1892 he entered the Kyōto School for the Blind and Deaf, where he became a pupil of Furukawa Rōsai , and in 1896 he transferred again to Kikunaka Kōtō in Ōsaka. He also studied kokyu with Kikuzuka Yoichi and mastered the secrets of koto kumiuta from Terashima Hanano (the composer of “Shin Takasago”) in Nagoya . In 1915 he became independent and opened a school in Kōbe, taking the name Kikuzuki. That same year he became the third Kikunaka and changed his name to Beishū . In 1921 he became a teacher at the Hyōgo Prefectural School for the Blind, and in 1931 he became the head of the Nihon Tōdō Ongaku-kai. He composed over 40 pieces. In 1952 he committed suicide by jumping into the sea with one of his pupils.
