Born in Kumamoto in 1855, Sasao Takenoto (Sasao Takenoichi) went blind when still a child. He studied Kyūshū-kei shamisen under Muraishi Mitsuse’ichi, a disciple of Miyahara Kengyō. He later moved to Kyoto and and became a highly-regarded Jiuta performer and teacher there. He returned to Kumamoto in 1924, where he lived until his passing on February 6, 1938.
