Nakahira Fukunoichi

Nakahira Fukunoichi (Sugihira Heikichi) was born in Koriyama, Yamato (now Nara Prefecture) on June 21, 1852.
Blind from age 4, he studied Ikuta-ryū koto under Nakagawa Kengyō IV at age 6, and Nogawa-ryū shamisen in the style of Okazaki Kengyō.
In 1868, he established an ensemble to perform Jiuta (shamisen-based) music. In 1905, this group was reorganized as the Tōdō Ongaku-kai, and he became its first president. In 1913, he became the principal of the music school operated by the association, and also organized the Kinkyoku-sha to teach younger students.
An effective and highly-regarded teacher and performer, he passed away July 31, 1938, leaving behind a legacy that influenced much of 20th-century Hōgaku (Japanese traditional music).
