Born in Miyazu City, Kyoto, 1901, Isono Sazan (Isono Tadatsugu) first began learning shakuhachi in middle school from Ishikawa Kifū.
After graduation he began formal Tozan-ryū shakuhachi studies with Abe Kōzan, then became a student of Nakao Tozan I, from whom he earned his masters license (shihan) in 1927.
He was a permanent director of the Nihon Sankyoku Kyōkai (Japan Sankyoku Association) and the Iemoto of Sasei Kai shakuhachi school.
