Tanaka Kōmei first studied the trombone at Tokyo National University of the Arts and Music, but then began his Kinko-ryū shakuhachi studies under Living National Treasure Yamaguchi Gorō in 1974, receiving his masters certification from Chikumeisha in 1979. He continues to perform and teach both shakuhachi and trombone.
