Born April 10, 1900 in Kagawa Prefecture, Nakamura Sōyō (Nakamura Seihei) lost his sight at the age of three. At six, he began Ikuta-ryū koto studies under Hirai Kengyo in Takamatsu City. He soon began composing koto music incorporating elements of Western music. In 1931, he became the head instructor at the Osaka School for the Blind, and in 1932, he founded the Greater Japan Koto Music Association (later the Sōfū-kai). After retiring from the school for the blind in 1963, he became a lecturer at Osaka College of Music in 1967. He composed over 100 pieces. His eldest daughter, Reiko, became the second Sōyō upon his passing in 1970.
