Hirabayashi Ayako was born December 7, 1942 in Kawasaki City. She studied Ikuta-ryū koto and shamisen under Shimoshima Fumiko (of the Hase Kengyō lineage), earning her Shihan (master teacher license) in 1967. She belonged to the Kikune-kai.
