Born in Hyōgo, Kariya Sōzan (Kariya Chiaki) studied shakuhachi from the age of 13 with his father, a council member of the Shin-Tozan school and a student of Hoshida Ichizan I and founder of Shingen-sha branch of the Ikuta School of koto. Sōzan received his title of Dai-shihan (grand master) and became a teacher at Kōbe shinbun.
He moved to France to study classical music as a cellist (Paris Conservatory and Pasdeloup orchestra), and became the representative of Shin-Tozan-ryū in France. Kariya Sōzan has many musical activities in France, Belgium, Japan, Germany and England as both a performer, teacher, and recording artist. He has given concerts at the Guimet Museum and the Jacquemart-André Museum in Paris, in Cabourg, Hilden and in Düsseldorf, Germany.
