Shimada Akemi was born in Yamaga City, Kumamoto, November 23, 1937. She studied Ikuta-ryū shamisen and koto under Murase Toshiko, Ideta Isako, and Yano Tamiko, and received her teaching credentials in 1960. She was a member of the Kumamoto Hōgaku Kyōkai, the Koto Musicians Association, and the Sōmiai.
