Born in Yamaguchi Prefecture, September 3, 1914, Hamamoto Utami studied Ikuta-ryū koto and shamisen under Gotō Fumi (Nihon Tōdō Ongaku-kai) and Chikushi Katsuko. She started teaching in 1931 and received the Ube City Cultural Federation Board of Education Award in 1971. She belonged to the Chikushi-kai and was active as a performer and teacher for more than 40 years.
