Born February 4, 1905 in Iwate Prefecture, Ogasawara Chōfū (Ogasawara Tokuji) studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Satō Seibi. He started teaching in 1932 and was the head of the Iwate branch of the Bifū-kai. He was active as a teacher and performer for more than 50 years.
