Yamazaki Hokuzan (Yamazaki Yasurō) was born December 23, 1891 in Shimane Prefecture. He studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Furukawa Keizan. He received his instructors license and began teaching in 1923. In 1953 he became a councilor for the 15th term of Tozan-ryū. He is a member of the Shimane Prefecture branch of the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Society.
