Tanabe Shōzan was born in Okayama in 1961 and studied shakuhachi with his father from childhood. Upon entering Waseda University, he began studies with shakuhachi master Yamamoto Hōzan I. Shōzan was awarded master teaching status in the Tozan School of Shakuhachi and in 1993 received the top prize in the first Nagatani Kengyo All Japan Competition for Traditional Music. His sounds have been heard in all parts of the world. In 1994, under the auspices of the Japan Foundation, Tanabe visited and performed with native musicians in China, Uzbekistan and Mongolia. He has played at the Vatican for Pope John Paul II, and in 1997 Carnegie Hall resounded with his brilliant tones. While carefully preserving the shakuhachi's traditional flavor," Shōzan works in a wide range of musical situations.
